 Lateral or Medial Ligament Reconstruction Surgery 

Lateral or medial ligament reconstruction (and syndesmosis repair) requires careful protection of the newly reconstructed ligaments. You'll be in a cast initially, moving into a moon boot and eventually an ankle brace to support stability during daily activities and rehabilitation.

Phase 1: Day of Surgery

Surgeries this applies to: Lateral ligament reconstruction · Medial ligament reconstruction · Syndesmosis reconstruction

Crutches or KneeStrider

Why you need it: Move safely without weight on the foot.

Note:  It is your choice to use crutches or a KneeSrider. You will need a mobility device for at least the first six weeks after surgery. The doctor will advise you at the follow-up appointments how long you should continue using these devices.

Cast Protector

Why you need it: Keeps cast dry in the shower.

Note:  You can use this every time you shower, just ensure it is dry before use. It is advisable to sit on a chair while showering, so that the water does not flow directly into the opening of the cast protector.

Elevating pillow / leg support

Why you need it: Reduces swelling.

Note:  Elevate your leg above heart level when resting. Use at least 3 pillows.

Ice Packs

Why you need it: Manages pain and swelling.

Note:  Use for 15-20 minutes at a time, ensuring that the cast remains dry.

Phase 2: Once the cast is removed

(around 6 weeks after surgery)

Moon Boot 

Why you need it: Protects the repair; keeps foot in safe position.

Note: You will start using a moonboot as soon as the circular cast is removed. Please ensure to follow doctor’s instructions on the duration of use. 

Compression socks

Why you need it: Helps prevent blood clots (DVT) and reduces swelling.

Note: Wear during the day and remove at night unless otherwise instructed. 

Laced Ankle Brace 

Why you need it: To provide support and stability to the ankle.

Note: Worn together with a comfortable shoe, especially during physical activity
