Lateral or Medial Ligament Reconstruction Surgery
Lateral or medial ligament reconstruction (and syndesmosis repair) requires careful protection of the newly reconstructed ligaments. You'll be in a cast initially, moving into a moon boot and eventually an ankle brace to support stability during daily activities and rehabilitation.
Lateral ligament reconstruction
The lateral ligaments consist of 3 ligaments on the outside of the foot and ankle. They normally tear from the front towards the back with a sprain of the ankle. If surgery is not required (Conservative management): Wear a moonboot for 2-4 weeks after the injury - your doctor will advise when you can transition out of the moonboot into a lace-up brace
If surgery is required:
-
After the surgery, you will have a back slab of the lower limb. Your cast will remain on for approximately 2 weeks, when it will be removed and a circular cast applied. Your cast will remain on for approximately 2 weeks, then a moon boot will be needed.
-
It is important to keep the cast and the wounds dry; a cast protector is advised
-
During the first 4 weeks after surgery, you are not allowed to bear weight on your operated foot. Crutches, a kneestrider or a wheelchair is advised during this period.
-
At 8 weeks after the surgery, you will be able to transition into tekkies with an Ankle brace, with continuous rehabilitation

Crutches or KneeStrider
Why you need it: Move safely without weight on the foot.
Note: It is your choice to use crutches or a KneeSrider. You will need a mobility device for at least the first six weeks after surgery. The doctor will advise you at the follow-up appointments how long you should continue using these devices.

Phase 2: Once the cast is removed
